Choosing the Best Sunscreen for your Family

Now that summer is upon us, it is more important than ever to remember to lather up our kids and ourselves in sunscreen. We all know the reasons why we should use sunscreen, so no need for another post about the benefits and reasons why you need to wear it. But most of us just walk into a drugstore and pick up the most affordable one, not knowing anything about the product or what is in it.
How to choose the best sunscreen for your family. 3 things you should look for when choosing a sunscreen that is safe for your family.
I'm not going to lie, I used to be the person who just goes in, buys my favorite spray-on sunscreen {FYI - this post just came out} especially when it's on sale and just goes on living my life. Unknowing what I am doing to my body. Then, I got educated about 3 years ago about what chemicals and toxins are in conventional sunscreens. I am not the type of person who is interested in taking the time to make my own, so I needed other options.

Why should I care?

With all of the potential health hazards of chemicals today, we really should be more careful about what goes onto our skin. Our skin is our body's largest organ so we should make sure that we are treating to right.

Our family's favorite sunscreen. 3 things to look for when you are looking for sunscreen for your family. Be safe this summer!

What to look for when choosing a sunscreen?

  • At least an SPF 30. Most expert dermatologists agree that SPF30 is sufficient for us and our children. SPF 30 can block out 97% of UV rays when applied correctly. A higher SPF increases that percentage only slightly. Use whatever SPF makes you comfortable, just just won't have to apply it as frequently.
  • UVA & UVB protection. Did you know that the SPF rating is for blocking out UVB rays? UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn. There is no rating for blocking out UVA rays - the rays that are most attributed to aging. Only recently did sunscreens start to add other blockers for UVA rays. Be sure to check your packaging or the products website to make sure they state that it is protecting from both UVA/UVB rays.
  • A high EWG rating. The EWG {Environmental Working Group} works to rate the ingredients in popular brands of sunscreen, cleaning products, etc., to provide the public information on what is really safe for their families. Every year the EWG comes out with a sunscreen guide. This can help you choose a sunscreen based on ingredient information, not just what is on sale. I like to choose a 1 or 2 {out of 10, 1 being the best} for my family.
I have been trying out several sunscreens for a couple years. Last year, I tried out several 'child' sunscreens that fit this criteria.

Based on my research and product trials, here are my recommendations:

You can also find several DIY sunscreens using essential oils on Pinterest. I have pinned several that look good on our Summer Fun Pinterest Board so you can look on that board for inspiration!

I use these products for myself as well. My thought process is, 'If it's good enough for my baby, it's good enough for me.'

What sunscreen do you use and how is it rated on EWG?

    1. COOLA came up as a rating 1! Good job! It looks like Rainwater Botanicals isn't rated {at least they haven't rated it yet} and the day cream would be listed under the cosmetics guide.

Where did you find the COOLA?
