Fall Scavenger Hunt for Toddlers & Other Fun Fall Activities for Kids

Fall is for sure my favorite time of the year! Playing outside in this crisp weather is great. This fall scavenger hunt is something I put together after my toddler showed an increased interest in this cooler weather and all of the outdoor changes that come with it.

Materials needed for this project:

  • A box: shoebox, shipping box, jewelry box - whatever you have on hand
  • The printable key
  • An outdoor place

My daughter is a collector. When we go outside to look at things, she would rather go and try to touch it or pick it up rather than just look and point. In the teaching world, we call that a tactile learner. Most of the scavenger hunts I have seen out there involve just looking for things and checking them off, but that doesn't work for her. So I modified the idea to include the actual act of collecting the items to better suit a toddler's love for exploring.

Process for collecting:

  • As you walk through your neighborhood, park or walking path, point out some of the items that are on the key and ask your child to find them.
  • As they find them and pick them up, have them place the item in the box.
  • Fill your box with fall goodies! I am sure your box will become overfilled in no time
  • Allow your kids to add things they find that aren't on the list. This is their discovery time!
At the end of the day, go through your box and talk about how some of them are tell-tale signs that fall is coming or that it is here. Use this as an educational opportunity.
